AMD I would have to say KT4 Ultra... it's cheap but damn fine! (KT4VL is also another good choice)

For AMD, I would go with a new nForce2 board. They're the fastest, are (mainly)rock stable, full featured, and should last thru the life cycle of Socket "A".

I got my 8RDA+ for $102, which includes LAN, firewire, USB 2.0, and kick @ss onboard audio.

Get the ASUS a7v333 its the cheapest and the best. im using it now. The nforce is the exact same only that it has a built on video card which you certainly are not going to use if you are going to play games. Also i think it has ready firewire support where as the a7v333 doesn't.
