headset problem

OS: windows xp media center
CPU/Ram: 1.6 ghz, 1 gig ram
Comment:
i tried out a new headset and plug into front of my laptop, i can hear through the headset but also through the speakers at the same time. I checked audio properties and switched to headset, but still the same thing.
And ideas?
