I am at the end of my wits. I've troubleshooted with various sites regarding my issue, but I still can't find a fix. The headset works fine on my other computer, so the headset itself is not at fault.
I have Windows Vista operating system.
I have a microphone-headset combination, with two separate lines (one for mic-the other for the headset).
They are both plugged into their respective correct ports.
The headset works fine, but the system doesn't detect the microphone at all.I have tried downloading a new driver as one site suggested, and it still doesn't work.
I've rebooted several times. That doesn't wotk.
I've tried using other microphones. Still nothing.Everything on my computer is up to date, including my sound card and driver.
On top of that when I click the speaker icon to access that menu, I go to recording and 'NO AUDIO DEVICES INSTALLED' appears.
I have accessed my device manager to allow it to scan for updates for the "High Definition Audio Device" that is listed in the file for 'Sounds, video and game controllers'.
The response after the scan was "The best driver software for your device is already installed. The driver software is up to date"But the microphone is still not working, and it is not being detected. The system still shows "No Audio Devices Installed"
Please help me.

Mind telling me how to check? I know that my computer is made by Gateway, but I'm not sure about the motherboard and sound card model names.

Support
Gateway 550GR Desktop Computer
http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/3...Drivers:
http://support.gateway.com/support/...HDRealTek5136.exe - Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Version: 5.10.0.5136
Un-install anything listed for that in Add/Remove programs BEFORE you install the software again.
Update - in Vista you do that in - Control Panel - Programs and FeaturesDO NOT install the sound drivers (or most drivers for that matter) while booting the computer BEFORE you have installed the drivers and related software (e.g. sound "driver" installations usually include sound related software as well) using the proper download.
NOTE: if you have installed Windows from scratch on this computer, you must install this FIRST before you install any of the other drivers (or you can install the newest one available for the main chipset, desktop 915 series, available on the Intel web site - the INF Update Utility) , and you should install all of the drivers, or the newer version if more than one is listed :
Intelchipset1025.exe - Intel(r) Chipset Software Installation Utility Version: 7.0.0.1025

102007 - Intel (Augsburg) No CPU Motherboard R0
102175 - Intel (Augsburg) No CPU Motherboard"R0" - The only difference may be the first mboard has a chipset that supports RAID, the second one does not.
......I searched the web using: Intel (Augsburg)
Intel® D915GAG (Augsburg) Mainboard
http://www.e4allupgraders.info/dir1...That indicates the same mboard series is used in emachines systems.
The is the same mboard, except yours has a Gateway bios version instead of an Intel bios version:

Page 44, 45One of or both of the wires for the sound header for the mic may be disconnected inside the case at the header (the mic probably has a mono connection - two wires)
Also
- when you use only a single pair of speakers connected to the green port at the back of the computer, the other two ports are for audio out (light blue?) and mic (pink) - the mic port there should work fine with a mic.
- when the sound header has been configured so the front headphones port works, the rear line out port does NOT work.
- when you use more than one pair of speakers connected to the ports on the back of the compter, a Realtek utility (if the sound software has been installed correctly) uses the other two ports for the other speakers, NOT their default line out and mic uses. The utility may pop up automatically after you have plugged in two or more pairs of speakers into the back ports, and ask you what you are plugging in, and/or there is probably an icon for it in Control Panel.
- when you have more than one pair of speakers connected at the back of the computer, the front headphones port and/or the front mic port may be disabled!
