Please help before I go mad!!
I have just built my first basic semi HTPC with the following spec:
Samsung LCD TV LE32R87BDX
Aero Cool M-40 Case
Antec Earthwatts 380w PSU
Biostar TAG690G
AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+
360gb Seagate HD
2gig 800mhz ram
Samsung dvd writer
Edimax Wireless PCI
Keysonic ACK-54RF
Vista 32bitIf I connect the HTPC via a VGA cable to the TV & sound line out (green) to the line in(TV), everything works OK apart from I have to turn the sound quite high on the TV. This is running at the native 1360x768.
If I connect the HTPC via HDMI on the motherboard to the TV HDMI (2) the picture seems even better than the VGA (Still 1360x768) but the sound & video is running at least twice the speed??!!??
I have tried changing the graphics aperture to 512mb (It was on Auto) but it made no difference. I have also downloaded & tried the latest drivers for both the grahics & sound from ATI & Realtek. The video is on board & has a choice of outputs- VGA,DVI,HDMI.
What is even stranger is when the HDMI is plugged in & set to the native resolution 1360x768 it all runs to fast. If I lower the resolution to say 1280x1024 it runs normal normal but of course the pictures poor.
On VGA it all runs fine at 1360x768. So I need to figure out how to get it working properly through HDMI.
Turn it off, wait a while, turn it back on again.

The picture is sure better when you use HDMI because HDMI is all digital. VGA is anaolg. Your LCD TV is also digital. So there is no digital-analog conversion taking place somewhere along the line HTPC to LCD TV when using HDMI.
As I understand, your problem is something like fast forwarding the movie. Everything is fast. Can you adjust frame rates ? It looks as if your TV picture setting is 1080/24p but your HTPC gives out 1080/60p.
Please just check the manual of your TV for Picture Settings page if such settings are made manually. My LCD TV adjusts itself automatically on the signal fed to it.
Hope the above helps.

Thanks SuatCINI, I will have a look later at the settings but I cannot remember seeing an option to change these settings you asked about.
Just to let you know it runs twice as fast when playing mp3's,DVD's & streaming.
Is it possible my TV is not communicating properly to the HTPC via HDMI as far as the correct frame rate setting ?
Turn it off, wait a while, turn it back on again.

What program do you use to play DVDs, mp3, etc.. PowerDVD or something ? May it be stuck at 2x ?

To play mp3's I have been using Windows Media Player, for DVD's I have been using PowerDVD, for streaming I used You tube through IE, BBC iplayer & had a play around with Media Portal.
They all run fast through HDMI at 1360x768
Turn it off, wait a while, turn it back on again.

Is there anything in the 81 page pdf that I should be looking for jam ;~)

Did you look thru all the pages? The only ones that are of much use are the 1st couple on how to remove, install & update drivers. I suggest you dump your current drivers then clean the system & registry with a program such as CCleaner, then reinstall the drivers as per the instructions.

Well I fitted as a temp measure another hard drive & installed XP. With XP everything runs fine.
So it must be a vista driver issue, how do I stop Vista installing it's own drivers when I reboot after uninstalling the Realtek ones??
Turn it off, wait a while, turn it back on again.

If you are watching regular DVD, do not adjust the video to 1366x768 resolution and let the TV set do the screen re-scaling. Regular DVD is 720x480 in resolution and your graphics card is trying to rescale the video.
Some TVs have very good scaling engines built into them.
Also try 1080i or 720p output from your HTPC depending on what your TV may accept and compare results.

This has be a vista issue with the hardware & Realtek/Ati Drivers. I have even tried updating the bios.
Remember everything works fine as it should under XP!!
Wish I had not spent good money on Vista Now!!
Will have to stick with Vista & use HDMI for just Video & use the standard Audio output connected to my hifi.
Turn it off, wait a while, turn it back on again.

I am confused. I thought your video thru HDMI runs fast with Vista. But now you say "use HDMI for just video". How is that ?
Anyway, I do not have the same problem as you. I have on-board Realtek audio and Radeon HD3850 with DVI-D. I convert DVI-D to HDMI with the help of an adapter. I have normal video. No fast run. Radeon has ATI drivers. Realtek has MS drivers.
By the way, where does your HDMI stem from ? Graphics card or motherboard ? If from M/B, did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard ? If from graphics card, did you install the latest ATI drivers v8.9 ?

Thanks SuatCINI for sticking with me on this post :~)
The motherboard has an HDMI output as well as DVI & VGA, it's all onboard.
I have tried the drivers that came with motherboard cd. I have also tried the latest drivers from the ATI & Realtek. I have also tried a full clean reinstall of vista BUT vista does install it's own Realtek drivers from the get go.
"I am confused. I thought your video thru HDMI runs fast with Vista. But now you say "use HDMI for just video". How is that ?"
The video & sound only runs fast through HDMI when i use choose HDMI for the sound. If I chose normal speakers instead of HDMI sound then HDMI video works fine. Yes I'm confused as well :~)
Turn it off, wait a while, turn it back on again.
