ok so this is really for my friends hdd not mine and he just wont buy a new one lol he has a 20GB hdd and when i try to install XP for him it gives be a BSoD at 11% of copying files he has been having trouble with his drive multiple times and like he has formated zeroed it and tryed again and e told me he got it to 51% and then he got a BSoD, is this repairable or should he just get a new HDD??

CPU: P4 2.66 GHz
RAM: 1GB
HDD: 250GB
GPU: Geforce FX 5500

Laptop:

CPU: Turion 64 x2 Tl-50
RAM: 2GB
HDD: 160GB
GPU: Mobility Radeon x1600 128mb dedicated, 384Mb shared 512

What makes you so sure the HDD is the problem?? You didn't list any other specs, but what about the RAM...has it been tested with memtest86? And since you're working with such a samll HDD, format as FAT32, not NTFS.

um i know its the hdd, cause like i sold him my old computer pieces which was a mobo, cpu and ram and it was working fine together before, and like his hdd was doing this before with his old stuff but ill tell him to fat32 it and ill post the result

ok fat32 didnt work either so im sure its the hdd now, is there any other reason other then the ram/cpu/mobo cause i've already eliminated those, as this happened with his old mobo/ram/cpu

It actually sounds like a bad install disk,
or optical drive.

Download the diagnostic software from the HDD manufacturers website, create a bootable floppy (or CD), boot off it, & check the condition of the drive.

You might want to check for bulging or leaking capacitors on the MBoard.

no the mobo is fine it was mine at one point and was woking 100% no prob at all so to othehill it cannot be a capacitor on the mobo, and to jam i actually found my maxtor cd lol and his hdd is also maxtor so the next time i chill at his house i place it in and run the diagnostics on the cd :)
