hey all...to any of you who have questions about this post http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/137959.html ...i have the answer ...one of my friends bought a 300 GB sata hdd and had this EXACT problem.... we tried everything and nothing worked...so i told him to take it back and get another one from warranty..and now it works perfectly...so it IS a HDD problem...to any of you who have this problem.... get a new HDD and it will work fine

Statements like that are not very helpful Grif. It's not 'always' the hard drive. You can download a diagnostic program from the hard drive manufacturer's web site to determine if it is or isn't.
