I am building a system and I have installed all components. System POSTS fine and BIOS "sees" everything that is installed. When I install WinXP, it installs, restarts system and then goes to install screen again. When I try to boot from HDD, it just keeps resetting the computer. I have tried my IDE HDD and it does the same thing. I am using a SATA drive originally. I notice a blue screen on the IDE boot but it lasts for maybe half a second so I have no time to read it. Anyone have any suggestions for this problem? Any help would be great!

"When I install WinXP, it installs, restarts system and then goes to install screen again."

Don't press the key to boot the CD while booting after the first session where Windows Setup loads the initial files and reboots.
If you do press the key, Setup will start from the beginning again.

If you are not getting the prompt to press a key to boot from the CD every time it reboots or boots and it boots the CD without you doing anything, something is screwed up. The only time I have seen that happen is when a person had two hard drives connected. I cured the problem on that computer by going into the bios Setup pages, and on the same page the boot order is on, there was a list of bootable hard drives - I disabled the display of the drive model name that was not bootable.
If that doesn't help the CD or DVD drive you have the Windows CD in may be defective - try another optical drive.

If you suspect the computer is rebooting before Setup has actually finished it's first session, or any session (you should see "Setup is rebooting in 15 seconds" or similar if it has completed successfully), and/or if you are getting messages Setup can't find xxx file(s), Setup may be having problems reading the CD, or Setup may be detecting problems reading your ram.
In that case, see this recent thread:
http://www.computing.net/hardware/w...
....

If you have flashed the bios, you must load bios defaults after you have flashed - otherwise the contents of the cmos and the bios Setup pages may not match what they are supposed to be for that bios versioon and your mboard probably won't work properly.
.....

Otherwise, your PS has more than enough capacity and is probably OK.

Did you plug the cpu fan into the right cpu fan header on the mboard onto the right pins? Many AMD X2 (socket 940) mboards have a 4 pin header for the cpu fan, but your cpu fan female wiring connector may have only 3 wires and pin holes - if it isn't on the right pins the bios will detect no rpm from the cpu fan, and most recent mboards will shut down the computer or reboot if no rpm is detected in a short time after booting in that case.
Are you sure you have your ram in the right slot(s) and that it is properly seated in it's slot(s)? Check your mboard manual.
Did you check whether the ram you installed is compatible with your mboard before you bought it?
If you didn't, not all ram that you might think would work will work properly in your mboard.
See response 5 in this for some info about ram compatibilty, and some places where you can find out what will work in your mboard for sure:
http://www.computing.net/hardware/w...
Correction to that:
Mushkin www.mushkin.com

Even if the ram you are using is compatible, you can have problems, even with new ram, because the ram has poor connections in the ram slot(s).
See response 2 in this - try cleaning the contacts on the ram modules, and making sure the modules are properly seated:
http://www.computing.net/hardware/w...

If the hard drives you are trying to boot already have Windows installed on them that was installed when they were on another computer, XP won't boot into Windows if the mboard chips are more than a little different - typically what happens is you see the first bit of Windows graphics, then a black screen with a blinking cursor top left and nothing further happens - that is normal. You can fix that by running a Repair Setup procedure if you don't want to lose the data already on the partition Windows is on.

Thanks for all the ideas. One more question though. I am really new to PC building and I did notice in the book for the motherboard something about loading SATA drivers...is that just to use the RAID function or is that to use SATA in general. My CD/DVD drive is connected through SATA and it works fine.

To answer your question concerning the SATA drivers. If you don't install the SATA drivers when prompted the drive will run as an IDE/ATA drive and run at IDE speeds, instead of SATA speeds.

I personally have this same setup and am now having issues with Ghost 2003 not finding by HDrive so I can't create an image. I haven't sorted this out so I can't definately say the cause is not installing the SATA drivers when prompted. As a side note, I have installed the SATA controllers and they show in Device Manager. I don't believe the drive is sunning as a SATA drive though. It shows as an IDE drive in the POST screens.

Mine shows as an IDE in POST as well and I am going to install the drivers tonight hopefully after I get a floppy drive to connect to the new build (didn't plan on having one in it, but I am forced to). I have checked on memory compatability and it seems to be fine, I think it is a driver issue ...hopefully! I am also going to connect my old IDE drive, repair the XP install on it and see if it boots...if not, then there is another problem I am not catching.
