Specs: Windows Vista, 4GB

i have a 1TB WD external HDD (via usb SATA)that i was using to back up my family photos and videos ( 2 kids) when it got knocked and now makes a few noises but is not recognised by my computer or explorer.

after trying to download a few freeware or trial data recovery programs they all want you to select the drive from "my computer"

using control panel - disc managment - it does show limited info.
disk 2 WD usb mass storage device - but no volume info or any further details. on properties is says it is not initialized

Is there some software that i can try or does someoen know what the likley problem is, HDD arm? circuitry connector?

if i have to take it to get looked at by proffessionals it will have to wait for me to save up the $$ - but i dont want to mess aroudn and lose data by trial and error

obviously my wife is stressed out we will lose all the family vids ( last 12 months or so - rest is backed up on DVD discs)

You could try to remove the HDD from its enclosure and connect it to the mobo Sata port.

Many external HDD failures are due to bad enclosures.

Good luck.

Once upon a time the floppy disk was king.
