hey i got my 500bg hdd and it doesnt seem to want to format.
It is a sata drive that i have hooked up with a sata to ide converter. I creat a 465.76gb partition and format it with NTFS but it always gives me a failed format error at end of the formating process. What is going on?
i have tried it on a computer with a controller and on with out and gives me the same error.

Are you using an XP install CD to boot and format the drive? If so, try fdisk. Delete the partition and create a primary DOS partition. Then run the install again and try to format the drive.

Try a smaller partition, like 125gb. To make sure it's not the 137gb barrier that's causing a problem.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Don't use Fdisk to create a DOS partition. A FAT32 partition on a drive that size is going to create huge cluster sizes and waste vast amounts of drive space. Stick with NTFS.

What's wrong with creating a DOS partition and letting the install format it to NTFS? It's worked for me every time.
