Hey, this is my first post, so I hope I'm doing everything right. I've been interested in purchasing a HDD cooling fan, as the Heat that's coming off my HDDs (1x 40g 5200rpm, 1x 160g 7200rpm) has been conerning me a little. These cooling fans take up one 3.5" slot, and I have one free which is located between my two HDDs. Now I was wondering, if the fan was pointing toward the 7200rpm HDD, would this affect the other in any way? IE, would it get hotter, cooler or stay the same (Due to the pressure from the fan, or whatever). And also, how noisy do these things tend to be? Thanks in advance, I hope I didn't ask anything stoopid ^^

I've never had a HDD fail from overheating but maybe I've just been lucky.

Why not move one of the drives and then you can point the fan away from both....?

Well a lot of people have said that it isn't wise putting two hard drives next to each other... so, with only three spaces, only one hard drive is gonna be able to be cooled. It's a shame nobody's thought of putting two fans on one cooler, that blow in oposite directions...

The 5200 rpm drive shouldn't be a problem at all. Just use the fan to cool the 7200rpm drive.

Some of the 5400 drives could get hot. Most of the newer drives are using fluid bearing system which keeps them cooler and longer lasting. One thing about a harddrive by cooling it......you will increase the life span of that drive 2x maybe more.

Any airflow will help cool both drives.

Period.

If it had two fans blowing opposite ways the air would go in a circle so it would be pointless.. anyhoo I also decided I wanted my drives to be a little cooler so I added a HDD fan between them, It didnt make much difference. Then I realized having my 80Gig drive above my 200Gig was a bad idea because the 200Gig drive got much hotter. So I swapped them and had the fan cooling the 200Gig drive and now they are about 5*C cooler.
