My son in seminary has a late model Gateway laptop. (out of warranty I think) When he turns it on it asks him for a 'hdd 0 password', or something like that. Worked fine yesterday, gets that on bootup today. Gateway wants money to help him. I have never heard of that before. Has anyone had experience with this?

Maybe you could clear your CMOS. If you open your laptop and look on the motherboard, there should be a jumper(located in different places depending on your motherboard) that you can use to erase boot up passwords.
