I recieved a BSOD with a text mesage on it ,calling it a stop error ,I wrote down the technicial details of the error message and did a search on the Dell support web site ,seeming to be a common error witth my system a fix was found and it worked ! Basicially I had to open the BIOS and change in the drivers section my H.D. to ATA auto detect from the SATA setting it had ? My ?, is my hard drive still running as a SATA drive or is it now running at the slower IDE interface ? I had recieved this "stop error" B/4 and the first thing recomended as usual is a reboot which in the past fixed the problem ,however after three attempts ,I was still getting the BSOD w/error mesage "Stop Error"> IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Stop:0x000000D1 this is the basic error ,it did list more tech data on error, my main concern is my driver for my H.D. now being set to the ATA Auto Detect setting causing my system any ill effects ? Any input greatly appreciated !
Thank You ,
Nick

You SATA drive is now in a ATA compatible mode - it is NOT running through an IDE hardware interface.
You can run a SATA drive in up to 3 modes - ATA, SATA, or in RAID mode if the chipset is capable of RAID. The support for ATA compatible mode for SATA drives is built into XP and does not require any special drivers. The other two modes require you install SATA or RAID drivers for the SATA controller(s).

"I was still getting the BSOD w/error mesage "Stop Error"> IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL..."

That error may have had nothing to do with which mode your SATA was set to in the bios Setup.

You can get the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error from many causes, but sometimes it can be just because the ram module contacts are not getting a good connection - this worked for me when I got that error:

See response 2 in this - try cleaning the contacts on the ram modules.

As I recall, you were warned back in July NOT to buy a new PC, especially a Dell. I know it was a b-day gift but there were many of us who knew you'd eventually screw things up, just like you did with your other PC. I won't say "I told ya so" but I guarantee you I'm not the only one thinking it :-)

My guess is you're "tweaking" again or have been playing with that TV card you love so much. You didn't bother to provide the rest of the error message & the Tech info that you didn't feel was important is probably the key to your problem...such as:

"Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (ox20000001, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xF6EA8BBF)

*** USBPORT.SYS - Address F6EA8BBF base at F6E8F000, DateStamp 3f04cf17"

Obviously the above would indicate a problem with the USB. Try posting the rest of the error message & maybe someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

As for your concern about the HDD, there is very little performance difference between ATA (IDE) & SATA HDDs. It would appear that you have an SATA HDD so I fail to understand why you'd change the "driver setting" to ATA?

... I'd kind of concluded he causes these problems just to have something to post about (hey, it takes all kinds)

I sense a little identity confusion as well - there must be a hundred posts onsite over that stupid card ; )

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.

Actually the entire error message I do have written down and you maybe correct about it being caused by a USB problem ,earlier in the day when I was at work my 10 year old son who I usally do not allow to use the new PC ,they (my 10 year old son and 12 year old daughter) now have been using my old P3 750MHZ which by the way still runs great a rock solid 7 year old PC ! I let my son use the new Dell for his Ipod Nano to download some music, I have I-Tunes installed on the new PC ,he did not remove the device properly by clicking on the icon in the system tray and closing it down B/4 undocking it ? It may be possible this caused the error to pop up ! Thanks for the thought ! Also I did add 1 G.B. of RAM to this PC that came with 1 G.B. of DDR2 RAM ,it now has 2 G.B. ,I purchased the RAM from Crucial, I did not touch the contacts ,and have installed RAM B/4 a very easy upgrade, however you never know perhaps they where not clean from factory ,it would take me no more then a couple of minutes to perform this task and Iam always cleaning the dust bunnies out of botth my PC's !
Thanks Again To All
Nick

You should always test your RAM...regardless of whether it's brand new, name brand RAM purchased from a reputable source such as Crucial. I've been burned more than once by bad RAM & no longer take any chances. When I buy memory, the 1st thing I do is test it with memtest86 before actually putting it into service. I test it by itself & if it will be paired up with other RAM in my system, I test it again when it's paired up.
