Subject: HD problem, plz help???OS: Windows XP ProfessionalCPU/Ram: P4Model/Manufacturer: IBM |
Comment: I've an IBM T30 Type2366 laptop. I just bought the recovery CD from IBM and did the recovery procedure back to the manufacturer setting. After the recovery, I went into My Computer, and see that there is only a Hard Drive appears there (Drive C), which should be two. My laptop has a 40GB HD, with 10GB on Drive C and the rest on Drive D before the recovery. But after the recovery it only shows that there is 10GB on Drive C, with Drive D disappeared somewhere??? I have consulted some computer techician and they said that my Drive D is actually still in my laptop but I need to use some Partition program to make it appear. Is it true??? Also does anyone know where I can get some free easy to use Partition program??? I tried to use Partition Magic 8.0 but I don't know what to do in there. Please help anyone, I am a total computer idiot!!!!!

Reply: (edit)Were there files on the D drive that you wish to retain? I am pretty sure all you need to do is take posession of the partition. Go to Manage> Storage, under My Computer and you should see that partition. I am not an XP user so I can't tell you HOW you take posession but I'm sure it is simple.

Reply: (edit)well I've backed up all files anyway. I just want the rest of 30GB to appear so I can use it. Its so frustrating that I know the space is there but I can't get it to appear and use it.

Reply: (edit)Open the "Disk Management Utility" and if it still shows it has a valid filesystem than just assign it a drive letter. Otherwise, use the "Disk Management Utility" to partition, assign a drive letter and format.

Reply: (edit)I'v recently had this problem also. To Partition your drive you have to reload windows unless Windows isn't on that drive. To check to see if it's Partitioned or not go to; Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools (in classic view) then Computer Management under Storage. Go to Disk Managment. You should see two Hard Drives.(not counting the CD Rom, It's listed look for NTFS in File System.)If not follow these steps after backing up all unsaved data. Insert your Windows Xp or Recovery CD. While in Windows Setup click create new Partition (all the data has to be deleted for it to ask or work). It will ask how many MBs to set the Partition. 1000mbs is a GB so 10000 would be 10 GBs (it will be like 9.8GBs maybe)It really dosn't matter what you name it. I think you can change it in my computer later. Select the Partition you want to set up windows on to make it the (C:) Drive. After Windows is up you should have two Hard Drives in my computer. I hope this fixes your problem. You can always Email me at jcdillon@hughes.net if you have any more questions.

Reply: (edit)I just relized you want to Unpartition the drive. I thought you wanted to create one. To check to see if it's Partitioned or not go to; Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools (in classic view) then Computer Management under Storage. Go to Disk Managment. You should see two Hard Drives. Try deleting the 30GB one by right clicking and click delete partition. I dont know if it would work with windows on it or not. If not just go to Windows setup and try to delete the extra Partition there. You might have to delete the data before it will show you theres two Partitions.
