Comment:

My 80g SATA hard drive is always rattling away with the led flashing busy, most of the time. Sometimes during launching a browser (usually Firefox) it gets really busy and sounds really rattly. At other times the computer seems really 'gluggy' with any keyboard instructions lagging while the hd led is 'busy' and the drive's rattling away.

I run all good antispyware and virus checkers, firewalls etc.

The 80g drive is partitioned into c: d: and e: and there's tons of free space.

Can someone tell me what's going on? Why is it so active when it could be resting?

If you are really short of RAM for the application mix that you are running, PCs can get stuck in something called 'thrashing'. That is when the CPU is continually paging memory data in and out of the page file, and has little time left to get any real work done.

Thrashing explained:

Go to Crucial.com and let it scan your machine for RAMs compatibility.

When was the last time you defraged your hard drive? That too will help acces the the stuff you are laoding quicker which will result in shorter hard drive loadups.

Thanks all and XpUser for your recommendations. I went to Crucial website and noticed the report said only one memory bank was in use - yet I had two 256mB DIMM in there. ??? so I checked the cards and found M1 module wasn't seated properly at one end! Since reinstalling the card I now have 512mB memory, the comp is behaving better and operating faster - and at last the "thrashing" has stopped!

Thanks for the help with this. I will upgrade soon to 1gB or even 2gB which is the max it can take.
