I have a hard drive making a sound like a rachet wrench as soon as power is applied.
Is this a common sound, and what does it mean?
I guess I hardly need to add that the BIOS can't detect the drive, and it seems to have reached the end of its life.

Sorry man, but your hard drive's life has come to an end, go buy another one, also, you might want to make sure that that sound is not a fan and your ide cable is just unplugged!

The sound is probably the heads dragging on the platters. It's called a 'head crash'.
