Solved Having a problem figuring out video card compatibility...

Specs: Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 (x64), Pentium 4 3.0GHz/ 4GB
So, my friend gave me an HP DC7600 SFF he wasn't using.


He had a video card in it, but he removed it when he gave me the computer.


Now, I got it home, and I put my own card in it. However, the computer won't boot with the card in! As soon as I plug the PSU back in with that card in, the power button stops working. The computer will turn itself on for about 3 seconds, then turn off, then back on, then back off, again and again...


I'd like to add a video card to the machine, but frankly, I have no clue what the requirements are for that system. I can't figure out which cards will work and which won't.

Can anybody give me some guidance here? Basically, I'd like to toss in the best (NVIDIA, no AMD) card that I can (low profile, of course).

9400GT draws a max of 50W, the 440GT draws 65W. Could be the issue.

You need to provide the full model of the card that won't work as a first step. Probably an underpowered power supply.

Below is a link to the specs of that small form factor PC. The power supply appears to be a 240W max. You need to post the +12V amperage rating off the power supply too.

Any low profile card that doesn't require a power connector should probably work.

My submission already had a link to the full spec sheet of the card that doesn't work. It does not require a power connector.

The PSU is the one that was included with the HP, since it is proprietary. A link to the HP desktop I am using was also provided in my submission.

The link to the HP site only lists the PSU at 240W. No +12V rail specs. You need to open the case.

From your specs above "Minimum 300W or greater system power supply (with a minimum 12V current rating of 22A)".

I doubt a 240W PSU will have any where near 22A on the 12V rail.

Are you sure the new card is being fully seated.

This is almost positively the issue. Thanks for digging up those links. I wonder what the last NVIDIA generation of card was that drew 50W...

Knowing the 12V amperage will still be of some value. That information should be printed on the PSU label. Or, if there is an actual model number on the back, you can post that or Google it yourself.

The 12V rail is the most important one and it runs other hardware besides the graphics.

It may be the issue but I doubt it. The wattage difference between the 2 cards appears to be closer to 5W than 15W. Even so, the difference isn't much & it only comes into play under full load. It's difficult to say because you didn't provide the PSU amperage specs.

The Compaq dc7600 SFF is fairly old & is based on an early generation Intel chipset that supports PCIe v1.1. Both your cards are PCIe v2.0. Although both should be backwards compatible, it's not always the case.

Looks like it was the power that the card was pulling from the motherboard. The GT 440 did not work, but the GT 430 works fine.
