Solved Have I lost half a hard drive!?!

May 2, 2012 at 03:09:05
Specs: Windows XP
Dear Anyone. I have a 1 Terabyte second hard drive. I divided it into 2 partitions, each roughly half a Terabyte. Was only using one half-terabyte partition. That got nuked by a virus, so I thought I'd format the whole hard drive and start again.Started formatting it from my working Windows primary hard drive - and it's saying 'formatting 488gig' NOT 'formatting 1 Terabyte!' Have I lost the other half?
Help! Chris.

When a drive is partitioned into two separate partitions, only one partition is formatted at a time. The other partition is till there and would be formatted separate from the first.

The information you are getting is exactly what you would expect.

You need to go into disk management, to format the other partition. Please Google disk management and partition.

If you now want a single unified drive you need to delete both partitions in Disk Manager and create a new single partition (or other configuration) and format it after your new partitioning is complete.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
