Put it this way...you could buy a brand new Dell with similar specs, but with twice as much RAM AND a printer for about $600.

Nobody robbed you...you did it to yourself.

You can talk to a lawyer all you want. By giving that person the money, you agreed to the transaction at hand. Suck it up and move on. Even if a lawyer were to take it you would lose more money for said lawyer. And small claims court would probably side with the vendor too.

When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

You've been shafted. To be robbed, someone must take your money without your consent.

I think you guys are jumping the gun here.

A 17 monitor costs around $100 new.
XP Pro, at least a legal copy, costs around $140. The mobo and processor combo will run you at least $150 not to mention any of the other items like Office.

If this person is going to support this machine in house then I would say you did alright. To compare a custom built machine with real live personal support to a propriatry Dell with Indian non support and warranty issues galore is not realistic or fair. Also of note is the three year warranty the Intel provides at no extra charge that no OEM will give you.

You people seem to forget that not everybody is willing or able to complie a list of parts from Internet sources, assemble and delpoy their own machine. Most people are not and just as many need a good deal of "hand holding" throughout it's life.

Just my opinion,

Sure, if you wanna break it down piece by piece (case w/ PSU $50, mobo $100, CPU $125, etc) it might seem like $1000 was reasonable...maybe even a bargain...but that's not the way to do a comparison. You have to compare it to an assembled unit with similar specs.

I guess if I was to total up the cost of the individual parts to completely build my Chevy I could say it's worth $100K?

XxxFrancisxxxUSA, & herosycho

actually, to be robbed is to have an object taken without your consent "with a weapon".

theft is to have an object taken without your consent.

but on the subject I would say that that wasn't a good deal... if it's a friend then ask for some part of the money back or as if you can give it computer back for a refund.

Well, um, not to start an argument or anything, but:

1) Yes, for $1000 you could get a computer with MUCH better hardware...

HOWEVER -

2) YOU WILL NEVER FIND A COMPUTER IN A STORE FOR THAT PRICE WITH XP PRO AND OFFICE 2003 PRO INTALLED!

If those are legal copies, they alone will run nearly $500. So, basically, is the hardware worth the other $500? Yes, probably pretty close. The question to my mind, then, is do you need those pieces of software? XP pro is darn good, so that I'd okay. But are you going to use Office Xp 2003 Professional? If so, by all means keep the system you got, and maybe see if you can find someone (different) to put a little more RAM in, or a new video card if you like to game. If you don't think you need the full Office 2003 Pro, then see if the guy will refund you your money to put toward a better PC, or maybe even try to sell the Office disks (and the license) on Ebay to at least recoup a little of your money.

Okay, now I'm going to duck so the next reply doesn't hit me straight in the head :)

But let's not forget here people, this is a USED machine. So I think $450-$500 is right on target.

I mean come on, if you saw this computer on Ebay going for $1000 would you bid on it? I don't think so.

Where does it say used?

Where have you seen a computer on E-bay with a 17 inch monitor and full legal copies of XP and Office for $500?

It dosen't and you haven't.

Sure it's a little light on the memory but it was no robbery. Most people are not gamers, most people do not build their own machines. MOST people surf and send E-mails and that's it.

Well, the whole "year-ago" thing changes the dynamics. A year ago, this system would have been worth a lot more than it is today. In fact, I used to work at a Circuit City (almost exactly a year ago) and this sort of system probably would have sold for around $700-800 back then, without Office, of course (Office 2003 didn't even come out until October of last year). That also would not have included the monitor, which you quote does. So, all in all, I'd say you did not get ripped off, or at least not very much. Sure, it isn't worth $1000 today, but you didn't buy it today :) Computers depreciate in value very quickly, as new hardware comes out, and what you buy today may well be out-dated tomorrow (anybody out there buy a Radeon 9800 Pro/XT the day before they announced the X800 series?). Besides, even if you did feel they ripped you off it is WAY to late to do anything about it. My previous advice stands: get some more RAM, and if you game a better video card. Other than than, a P4 2.4Ghz with a DVD drive and a CD-Burner isn't bad. Trust me, a year ago I would have LOVED to swap PCs with you - I had a P2 350Mhz with no CD-burner :(

I see, it had Office Xp around that time, and Nero 5, and PowerDVD, and other stuff... so I need money for RAM, and i was wondering if I REALLY need a new Video Card for games like SimCity 4 and or Rise of Nations? I'm not a fan of PC Games, what I would really like is more RAM for working with 3ds Max, but anyway, thanx for your help.. I'll find my way back...
