Specs: server 2008, pentuim dual core / 2gig
I am building a home raid 6 server wich is better software or hardware raid 6. If in hardware the controller fails do you have have the same one or get the same manufacturer version for it to work. How is software in rebuilding and use. Was told to stay away from software. Will be using windows raid version. This will be used a s a media, storage and proxy server so can you recommend a good proxy that can use caps and set speed limits.

Software and faux or fake raid are poor choices. Only a real hardware raid controller is fast and reliable to most enterprise level users. You should consider a good quality hardware raid card. They will provide all that a quality raid requires from backup to failover and support.

I'd get a good firewall or security appliance or a virtual or dedicated software solution. Many free ones exist but none will compare speed wise to a hardware device.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
