Hardware problems with98

May 25, 2009 at 22:34:04
Specs: Windows 98_se, Unknown /500mb
I had a computer given to me but have been unable to get it going properly. It wont recognise the "A" drive or the cd drive.
They are listed in the bios and device manager.
In the device manager I have problems with the Hard disk controllers.
The Primary IDE controller (single fifo) and the Secondary IDE controller (single fifo) have yellow marks against them.
The Standard PCI IDE controller is ok.

There are two of Standard controllers with the same problem with their Primary and Secondary controllers.
I have been trying to remove the cd drive from the registry but have not been able to get any reliable information on how to do this in win 98.

Any help would be appreciated

Regards Ancient

You need to install the motherboard chipset drivers.

Thanks for a quick reply. I have a new set of drivers but the trouble is I can't install them As I mentioned the A drive and the cd drive don;t work. Until I can get something to work i'm stuck.
Also it won't read the flash drive either.

You need to boot with a 98 floppy bootdisk (if the drive will boot. If not you should look for a good floppy drive) and choose 'cdrom support' or a bootable cd. Then copy the cd with the drivers to the hard drive. Then reboot normally into windows and run the driver install from the hard drive.

Check the cable on the floppy drive. Also verify you have the BIOS set for the correct type of floppy.

Watch the POST screens to verify the CD drive is properly identified by the BIOS. Just looking at the configuration screens is not enough.

If the boot order is not set for floppy first, CD second and then hard disk then the computer won't boot to either the floppy or the CD.

Only SOME Win98 CD are bootable. Most require the use of a boot floppy.

Thank you all for your advice.I finally got "A" drive to work and booted up with the startup disk and updated the BIOS.
I think I have more problems as I'm getting some messages from time to time at startup that I don’t understand.Next time I get one I will write it down and post it here to see if anyone knows what it means. At the moment it just hangs at the 98 startup screen.

Thanks all again for your suggestions I do appreciate the feedback.
