Subject: Hardware password on Dell laptop?OS: Windows XP ProfessionalCPU/Ram: Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 256MB RModel/Manufacturer: Custom build computer sys |
Comment: Hi everyone, One of mine friends' wife who bought a used Dell laptop from her company. When the laptop is turned on, it asks to enter the password. Since we don't know the password, so we can't enter for it. I also try to get into the BIOS, but can't get in. Is there a way to break this password? Is this the hardware password that uses to prevent from stolen? Is this a unique password anh created by Dell company? Thank you for any suggestion.

Reply: (edit)Tell your friend's wife to go back to the company and ask for the password. laptop power-on passwords cannot be bypassed, and yes they are designed to deter theft. You may be able to send the machine in to dell and have them unlock it provided you can produce proof of ownership I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Reply: (edit)She'll also need to change the ownership of the laptop, so that if Dell's support is needed in the future, she'll be the registered owner. Life's more painless for the brainless.
