Comment:

it has been said to me that if i where to run 400 ram at 333 then it would reduce the latency (ime not sure what latency is).
So if i where to buy 400 ram that has cl2.5 what would be the latency if it ran at 333, and can it be supported (will it work)

In many cases, that's true. If you don't already have it, try a program called CPUZ. It supplies all sorts of info about your CPU, motherboard, RAM, etc

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Download, unzip, & click on CPUZ.exe, then click on the Memory tab & see what comes up. I don't recall if it lists different ratings for DDR or not, but I know when PC133 is used, there's usally a listing for running at 100mhz, & another for 133mhz. The CAS Latency is always lower (faster) at 100mhz than at 133mhz.

i use PC2700/333mhz ram which shows latency 2.5 on sticker on it.
when i look at details of ram using Sandra from www.sisoftware.co.uk it says this ram is compatible as follows:
PC2700/333mhz with latency of 2.5
or
PC2100/266mhz with latency of 2

thanks so far, for the help,

can some one confirm, that if i put a 333FSB proccessor and a 400FSB ram on a A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard. both ram and proccesor would be set to 333FSB

Depending on the 333 processor you buy you may be able to set the FSB at 200 and run the processor at 400. The XPs are locked but by setting the multiplier differently you can do this. For instance a 2500XP barton core set at 200@11 will show as a 3200XP. If doing this you need to keep in mind that you are cooling a 3200 now. I have performed this trick on 2500XP bartons and on 2500 mobile chips. So far so good. No guarantees though.

For best performance, you should run your CPU & RAM at the same speed. If you have a 333FSB CPU, you should run your PC3200 at 333 instead of 400. Or you could try overclocking your CPU, which is what OtheHill is suggesting - that way you may be able to run both at 400.

some mobos let you run the ram faster than the CPU. eg. my ASUS A7V8X with 266 fsb CPU (2000xp-running at 266) and PC2700/333mhz ram (running at 333). Others wont let you run ram faster than cpu.
If they run at same speed it is called 'syncronous' if you run the ram faster than cpu it is called 'asyncronous'.
On reviews i have read over the years there seems to be some debate over which is better.
It may appear than running the ram faster is better, but then there seems to be an argument that the advantage is counteracted by it running 'out of sync' with the cpu

thanks for the replies, i much desire to know does the latency automatically adjust if you change the FSB for better or worse
