I have Norton Utilities 2001,and I use speed disk to defragment my hard drive ! I noticed when I have Norton Docton active , which I only turn on when my PC is sitting idle. Has been reporting that my H.D. going from being 99% defragmented to 98% , within aprx 1 week . This started recently, it use to stay at 99% for a long time. I have a Samsung 30 G.B. with about 5 G.B. used ! Yesterday when running Speed Disk , upon completion it reported that I had a error in a cluster , then it gave the cluster # .It recomended usin Norton Disk Doctor to repair the cluster ? I ran the Disk Doctor and on completion it reported "no errors found"! I have'nt installed or removed any large applications lately , however I do delete my cookies and temporary internet files on a almost daily basis ! Usally its about 600-700 K.B.'s in deletions ! Any and all input appreciated .

I don't think that you have anything to be at all concerned about -- what is going on isn't anything abnormal. Fragmentation occurs with just normal PC use. Going from 1% to 2% fragmented in a week is actualy VERY little -- I'll sometimes go from 0 to 3-5% fragmented in a day (I have an auto drefragger -- Diskeeper -- that runs only as needed, and it runs about every day!) While some folks get absolutely horrified that anyone would use Scandisk's (or Norton's or ??) autofix for bad clusters, encountering an occasional problem like that is quite normal, and so is the fix, whatever it is that Disk Docter did or disn't report that it did or didn't do.

You can also run windows disk defragment under system tools usually found in Acessories at the start button/programs. You will need to restart your computer and start it under safe mode. This will help the computer defrag faster because in safe mode most of the drivers are not turn on. Norton antivirus or any virus software holds back defrag because they are conflicting.
