My son's PC when booted cold will not see the harddrive, but if I hit the reset button it does see it. Windows starts to come up with default graphics and there it becomes unstable and the usb mouse wont work. It's like the PC got stupid. I tried a different working harddrive and same results. I'm thinking battery. Any clues?
Self built PC Win ME 700m proccessor 256m ram Thanks

Well the HDD sounds on its way out. Usually when a computer starts the HDD disks starts spinning. sounds like the HDD in your computer is not spinning fast enought for the computer to read it.
Have you tryed looking for the correect video drivers for your card. if you dont know what type of card it is have a look on the actual Hardware for the FCC code. Most hardware comes with this code. then search for your drivers using this code/
if the battery of your computer is on its way out the computer will tell you by adding a Line in the POST screen like CMOS Checksum error or some thing similar
any how if you need more information please e-mail me

As I said, I tried a different HD with the same results, in fact the HD works fine in another PC. I am now looking at the MB as the problem. All cables are connected correctly and even replaced cables to see if they were bad, no change. I think I will shop around for a barebones system and rebuild.
