HardDisk not recognised

I have 2 Hard disks(80GB) One is not reognised by any BIOS at all..Any ideas?
The second on Has a faulty Win 98. It reads in the PC but does not read as a slave..Windows does not recognise the HD. I tried installing XP but it sees it as FAT32 but when I try to install it says Windows Does not recognise the Partition..I have some vital Data I dont want to loose..I need help..Partition Magic 8 sees it as type 44 and cant do anything about it.
FDISk sees it as 4000mb.. When I try ionstalling WIn98 it tells my it couldnt update system files because of some virus definition etc...
Please Help!

Was this system working before with the 2 hdds? or did you just add the 2nd hdd ? did you add any hardware or software be for problem?

Don't pair up the 2 HDDs on the same cable/channel. Always use the master/slave jumpers...do NOT use the cable select setting. Use 80-wire cables for both channels.
