If you have bad sectors on the disk, it'll have to be replaced.

See this webpage for Maxtor's diagnostic utility:
http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.8db0c3d6932ced37294198b091346068/?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads/View%20By%20Category/Desktop%20Storage/DiamondMax%20Family

Download and run the diagnostic utility. If something's wrong with the drive it'll give you an error code. You can use that error code to get an RMA from Maxtor.

A windows 98 PC with 64MB RAM.

I am going to guess that your hard drive is way out of the warrenty time.

Run the test above to see what code you get, but as for the RMA forget it. replace the drive or invest in a new PC.

Back up now as that baby is heading south, but no one knows when.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users
