hello, please could someone clarify the diffrent types of hdd available. I currently have 2 ide hdds. One is 20gb and has windows installed on it, and the other is 80gb which has all my video work and music etc etc. I have now run out of space and am looking to buy a new big hdd but am confused at which one to buy. do serial ata drives work the same way as ide drives? or is it easier to just get a normal ide drive? my mother board is a Asus K8SVE Deluxe if that helps. thank you!

OK first of all does your WinXP CD contain SP1 or better? There are some issues that need to be dealt with when installing an internal ATA or SATA HD larger than 137GB. That said, SATA drives connect to a different type of controller than ATA (IDE) drives. Each SATA drive has its own controller, which is beeter than sharing the available bandwidth like ATA does. As far as raw speed goes neither type ever transfers even close to the theorical transfer speeds of SATA = 150MB/sec or ATA = up to 133MB/sec. YOur MBoard should have SATA controllers so that is what you should buy. If you want to install WinXP on the new drive you will need to answer my first question.
