Comment: For some reason when I start my computer my hard drvies will not spin up. I unplugged the IDE cable to eliminate either the PSU or the data system. Now it spins up. Does anyone know why it spins up without a IDE cable and won't with an IDE cable? Thanks

Reply: (edit)If everything was originally working and there is another drive of some kind on that cable, that other drive has probably died. Try connecting ONLY the HDrive, jumpered appropriately of course.

Reply: (edit)OtheHill may be on the right track - if another drive on the same data cable has serious problems such as a short in it's logic board, it can cause all sirts of problems. Check the data cable for damage. It is quite easy to rip the data cable by accident and sever the wires at either edge when removing it, especially if it has 80 wires, often right at the connectors or under the cable clamps there - if that's the case some wires may be shorting to each other. If in doubt, try another data cable. The only case I have encountered is if you try to connect an IDE drive to a proprietary wired 40 pin header/connector that is not IDE, such as one on an older sound card, the IDE drive will not spin when the data cable is connected.
