Hard Drive wont register

April 21, 2009 at 03:39:42
Specs: Windows XP
I have a 'My Book' external hard drive, and it used to automatically register when I plugged it in to my computer. Now it does nothing, and it is not in the 'my computer' tab with all of the other drives. However, the computer recognizes that something is plugged in because the 'eject device' pops up......

I went through the troubleshooter, and no help there.....
PLEASE HELP ME! I have lots of valuable pictures on there!!

The first thing computer users should learn is that you MUST backup your personal files. Sounds like you haven't.

Now, it appears your external enclosure is being recognized by your computer so the USB port is probably OK.

Without some specs on both the computer and the external hard drive there are too many variables to cover at this time. Post the computer brand and model or the specs if a custom unit. Also the model number for the external unit.

These files are backed up on an old computer, however that computer no longer has a power source... thus am not able to get to them at the moment. With that being said, I understand you need more then one back up location.

The computer is an MSI U100 netbook. (win. XP) 1G of RAM, and 160G of space.....
the external hard drive is a my book, 290 GB of space. The usb ports are fine, they work with other devices.
When I used to plug it in, it would automatically register in E drive, the auto-play would pop up, then an options menu. This no longer happens. The hard drive is probably 2/3 full.
At first I thought it wasnt compatible with the net book due to ram, however, it worked the first couple of times I used it.

Thanks for trying to help!

Look in Disk Management to see if the drive shows there. If so, post what Disk Management says about the drive.
