I could reformat both drives but could not get windows to install.Could install dos 6.22 and run fdisk & scandisk.I then ran a diagnostic boot disk to check drives it said replace both drives.I ordered a new drive but i need to know if it was a virus will it crash the new drive ?

This will wipe the drives totally, though you would be better off with a W98SE OEM Boot Disk:

Both drives are bad. I ran diagnostic tools on both drives, data life guard, and seatools.I don`t know if it was a virus that made them both go out at same time or something else. I`m worried that when I install new drive if it will be alright or if it was a virus will it infect the new HD and render it unuseable too?

Gosh! Viruses - what can't they do?

And just how would this hypothetical (and probably imaginary) virus infect the new hard drive? Contaminateded chassis? Tainted powersupply, or other mystical means?

Computers in the future may have only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1 1/2 tons.

Just wondering if it was a virus could it be in the bios, memory, cmos? Like I said earlyer I don`t know what made them both go out at the same time. I ordered A 250GB drive, and I want to make sure it wont crash as soon as I install it.Maybe I should buy a cheap small drive and install it first.

A power surge could cause them both to go out.

You're making more work for yourself & are worried over nothing. If it was a virus that took out the HDDs (which I highly doubt), it's NOT hiding in your computer waiting to infect the next HDD you install

As mentioned earlier a virus will not damage a hard drive.

You might have some other system problem.
Defective cable?
Bent pins?
Defective controller?
RAM problem?

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking it was a virus because of the kids & there e-mail.I have surge protector on the power & modem. I had a slave drive that only I use to store files & pic. I wanted to keep. I haven`t had any problems or storms here to cause both drives to go out. could not retrive any files on either disk every thing was gone.
