arg! So i get my new 160 gig western digital harddrive installed. I fixed the jumper settings then formatted to NTFS. Everything shows and is ready but when i try to save information or copy info to the drive it says $Mft Failure.

I researched on this after using checkdisk to scan for errors i always got a BSOD. And had to restart. So i used testdisk application to restore the MFT by the way of a mirror in testdisk.

So after that is repaired i run checkdisk but i lag out and it freezes..

now it says \$Secure corrupted and unreadable.

What just happened? Was the drive totally screwed and i tried to revive it like dr frankenstein? Or is this $MFT problem just changing into new s---?

What just happened?

We need more info about what you have & what you're doing. Since you mentioned jumpers this must be a PATA HDD? Are you trying to setup RAID?

If the drive is still installed watch the POST screens at start up to see if the drive is properly identified by both model and FULL capacity. If the drive is reported at about 127GB then your BIOS is not 48 bit LBA compliant.

If you don't see any POST screens then boot into the BIOS screens (del) and disable fast boot and any Logos.

Does your WinXP installation disk contain at least service pack one or better?

It shows in POST. The /$Secure thing went away... I don't know why or how. My friend who i bought the harddrive from says it had linux on it. When i got it i just did a quick format and partitioned it to NTFS.

My frist drive works fine now on primary master. This 2nd drive is on secondary master like you said from other thread.

The install looks fine, but the disk can't hold much information says write failed when i try to go over 2 gigs on the drive.

Is it because i didn't full format? Or is the drive busted?

Try deleting all partitions. Make one partition, if desired, and reformat it using full format.

Probably wouldn't hurt to run a drive fitness utility on it before using as a backup. Get that from the drive maker's site.

I repartitioned it and deleted all partitions and quick formatted again but still no dice.

Full format lags out - 3 hours and it lagged out.
I tried the drive tools from western digital but the drive still gives me trouble.

I need some software that can full format this thing or some software that allows me to test this drive completely. Help please :D

Get the drive fitness and other drive utilities for whatever brand the drive is.

First thing to do is run the drive fitness test. If the drive passes then use the other utility for setting up a new drive.

OH SNAP. I got that tool, it says failed.

Raw read error rate and re-allocated server count.

What can i do? or is it dead?

Sounds like the drive is beyond use.

You didn't mention how you fixed the jumper settings. I've had fewer issues with w/d's set on cable select. W/d has a hd utility (free) you can d/l called data lifeguard. It can run a smart test and surface test. G/l

The hard drive (2nd 160 drive) is on secondary master, secondary slave is a dvd/rom drive.
Primary master has my first 160 gig drive with windows and its working. Primary slave is not installed.

My post somehow was delayed. If your getting raw and read errors the drives bad as othehill said. Best to just get another. See if the retailer will replace it. Sorry.
