Hard Drive Swapping

Do you need to change bios setting every time you swap hard drives (or remove 1 of your 2 hard drives, if you had 2) or does the computer automatically detect it?

It depends. Are the BIOS options for hard drive detection set to AUTO?

you don't, but it speeds things up.... because the bios is wondering where the second one went.
