Hard drive stopped working

Specs: Windows Vista
Hello, last night I was on the computer and all the sudden it freezes. I go to push alt+ctrl+delete, but nothing happens. I can see in the bottom right corner of the task bar, the icons are still changing and blinking, but the Firefox is still frozen. So the next thing I do is hold down the power button until the laptop shuts down, wait 10 seconds and turn it on again. This time however, it never boots, the components are on because I can hear the fan, but the light on the front of the laptop that blinks when the hard drive is on is off, not one blink. So I am guessing the hard drive is not working because when I turn the laptop on, the screen stays blank but the fan is on. Please help with any suggestions. Thank you very much...and this is an internal hard drive

If you merely had a hard drive problem your laptop would still boot and you would see an error message. The hard drive does not have to be working in order for you to get video while booting before the operating system is supposed to load.

Your computer may be working normally but have no video on the built in display.

Your laptop may have a problem with the charging of the battery. Most more recent laptops will shut down and not start up fully again until the main battery has been charged at least a minimal amount.

Laptop no video (or video problems), and battery, AC adapter, power jack T shooting.

See response 1:

DO NOT plug in or unplug a monitor's video cable into / from a video port while the computer is running. Doing so can damage the monitor's circuits and/or the video adapter's circuits.

Some laptops will display on an external monitor without you having to do anything.

If you get no video on an external monitor, some laptops have a key combo that you must press to toggle the display to external video only / sometimes both / built in display video only - see the Owner's or User's manual for the model.
