Hard drive showing half of space available?

My hard drive (C:) is 581gb, and is only 3-4 years old. My Computer shows that this drive has 350gb taken up, but when I add up each file in my C: drive it only adds up to 176. Normally I'm pretty computer savvy but this ones got me stumped. What could be taking up all that space and is there any way to either get rid of it or compress it down a lot?

I need 200+gb for a Doctor Who download before I go back to college and can't use torrents anymore :)

You added up every file? Well anyway, the difference is likely due to hidden files and slack space.

I added up how much was in every folder, not every file. How is it possible that there is 174gb of hidden files?!

Oh, and I did some reading and I think it might be possible that I have a lot of system restore images taking up all that space... How do I check to see if thats the case?

DAVEINCAPS nailed it in response # 1.

Do you have "display hidden files & folders" enabled? Do you know how to view the hidden system restore files? Does Gateway install a hidden recovery partition? What size HDD do you have? 581GB is an odd number. Even accounting for the way HDD capacity is calculated, 581GB doesn't fit any common size drives.
