Hard Drive Running, System Inaccesible

July 25, 2011 at 14:27:16
Specs: Windows Vista, Pentium 2.6 GHz; 4GB RAM
When I leave my computer idle for some time (not sure of exactly how much time but at least 30 minutes) the hard drive starts running, my monitor goes black and I cannot reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Del) or activate the screen. I always have to do a hard shut down with the power button and then restart my computer.

I have also put the computer on sleep mode and unplugged the cable modem to see if this would affect it but, it doesn't. The same problem occurs after being idle for a while.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

I have Vista running on an HP system.

Most newerish systems ought to go to either sleep, hibernate or a new combo of both which is a hybrid sleep.

The simple answer may be to turn it off.

I guess you could do web search for how to discover the errors generated by the last sleep/hibernate. I think microsoft has a few pages on it. I forget exactly.

If it did work at one time, you may end up having to reload the OS and not install some app or driver that causes this issue.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

Jefro, though I appreciate the input it didn't really help much. The whole point to my question is that I never had this happen before and that's the way I want it. I don't want to have to keep doing a hard kill on my system every time it happens or having to shut my system down even when I'm going to be away for only 30 minutes.

Thanks for trying anyway. Unfortunate that there haven't been more responses.
