Subject: Hard Drive Question OS: Win XP Pro CPU/Ram: AMD K6-2 500mhz, 312MB SD
|
Comment: Hey all, I just had a question about upgrading/installing a new hard drive for my computer. I'm running XP on an AMD K6-2 500mhz system w/ 312MB RAM, and i was wondering that if i get a new hard drive, and it was ATA/133 would it work with my system? I don't know the name of my mobo, or where i could find out this name, but i need to upgrade since currently i have a Western Digital Caviar 10gig on it currently. i think it's ATA/66 but i am not 100% sure. I know the using ATA/66 on an ATA/133 board is ok, but i am not sure if it works with the board being ATA/66 and the drive being ATA/133. Any help would be appreciated. BTW, the drive i am getting is a 7200rpm ATA/133 Maxtor 80GB. it's the one on sale at Best Buy currently. Ok thanks for the help. Jay

Reply: (edit)I believe the ATA133 drive is backwards compatible...you should have no prob. Hey, if you have a OfficeMax in your area, they have a Western Digital 7200rpm 80gb ATA100 HHD for $20 after rebates! (if there are any left) I got to the store in my area at 11:05am on Sunday morning (opened at 11am) & got the last one...the salesperson said that there were 25-30 people waiting at the door when they opened! They were offering rainchecks but couldn't guarentee that the drives would come within the rebate period. It's worth a shot....

Reply: (edit)You can also check the box for the system requirements. Some may require the mobo to be Ultra ATA-capable. Caution about bestbuy - last I checked, their return policy is horrible. If you run into any problems, they do have a 15% restocking fee on pc equipment. I am not sure if it applies to hard drives, so you might want to ask. If you have a circuit city near you, they do pricematch (and have a no-questions-asked, no-fee return policy).

Reply: (edit)thanks guys. Unfortunately i don't have an officemax around here. i have Office Depot, which is basically the same thing cept 100x more expensive. i also have staples but i don't really like that place. I know circuit city has a price match, but Best Buy doesn't charge a restocking fee unless there is the box missing or some parts are missing, that much i do know. and if i do seem to come upon a fee type deal, then i'll goto circuit city. thanks guys.

Reply: (edit)CompUSA currently has WD 160GB for $60 after rebates. FYI, WD warranty on thier drives is only 1 year when purchased at Officemax. I beleive the same drive bought online comes with a 3 year warranty. There is a card inside the package that offers to extend the warranty for $14.95. I passed on that. Paid $40 after rebates for that 80GB, not going to pay another $15 just for extented warranty.

Reply: (edit)OtheHill, You're 100% correct about the warranty. I thought it was odd when I saw the "one year standard warranty" on the side of the package, when I'd always seen it as 3 yrs before. But lo & behold, the "extended" warranty card fell out...I picked it up & thought, "you've gotta be ****ing kidding me"...lol
