i have noticed that on pata hard drives there are 10 pins to either set the mode to master, slave, cable select, or single. but on sata hard drives there are 8 pins, i was wondering if they also use master, slave, cable select, and single? what are the 8 pins on sata hard drives for? i thought that the sata raid does all the configuring already and you have to set it in bios.

To add to my first response there are no Maste/Salve setting when using SATA drives. All are considered Masters. The link I supplied explains what the pins are used for. I didn't read the entire link so this is probably covered but some older MBoards with SATA I controllers require SATA I drives to operate correctly. One of the jumper positions is to make a SATA II drive operate in SATA I mode. This may or may not apply to all SATA II drives.
