Comment:

When i boot up my machine i get the message "A disk read error occured" and windows does not load. There are no floppies in the drive and the bios is set to boot from the hard drive. The drive is recognised in the bios. I have run seagate diagnostic tools and it came back saying there were bad sectors and these could be reparied using chkdsk. I booted using XP CD and went into recover console but the problem is that when it tries to detect the XP installation it should comeback with something like C:\windows\> but it is only showing C:\> . There is a lot of important stuff on the drive and I would like to try and sort this problem out. The Seagate tool did not actually say that the drive was faulty. Does anybody have any ideas what i culd try.

I just downloaded SeaTools Desktop last week to check out a drive and it moved the data off the bad sectors itself. Was then able to boot system. Try downloading the current version:

That drive can no longer be trusted. ASAP move your important data to a new drive or CDs/DVDs.
