I have a 60gig maxtor that has alot of really valuable info on it and when i hook it up to my external encloser and my big computer to get the stuff off of it it says it needs to be formatted.
This is starting to get on my nerves because i really need that stuff and this HD was just working not 2 long ago, what has happened to it!?!?!?Amd X2 4400+ @2.4ghz

I did that already, master and slave. I gave up on the external encloser awhile back. It seems like no matter where the jumper is it does the same thing. I would try it in the computer it came out of, but its broken at the moment and i'm waiting on new parts.

If it does that on the IDE, the partition table is corrupt and you're going to have a very hard time trying to salvage the data from it.

i was afraid of that, it says in the disc manager that there is a partition of 55G which is healthy and active, but then theres an unalocated partition of 16 gigs, which puts the total size at 71Gigs on a 60 gig HD. I have a recovery tool for hard drives and have used it before when my main dis crashed about a year ago so i guess its time to go through that again.

I think you should wait until you get the other PC that the drive was previously in fixed. The drive may be partitioned in a non-standard way and if you force any changes you may loose everything.

I agree its better, if you use the same system that you did to write the data in the first place, all the partitions will be visible. You might be able to see some of it in the new system. but the other partition wouldnt show.(displaying that message you mentioned). But the data is all there, just wait for the parts of the old system.

so there wouldnt be any other way to suck my info off of the hd without waiting for the old one to work? (im pretty doubtful the old system will run again, but im still gonna try)

Normally you should be able to use another PC, as long as the bios will see the drive, as most PCs default to an AUTO configuration for the drives. But in your case I think either the drive has lost it's partition and no PC will see it or it's partitioned differently.
If you could setup that drive in the cmos of the second PC the same way it's setup in the original then you should be able to see it OK. But you have no way of knowing what that original configuration is.
While in most PCs, an AUTO setting is the same, I've noticed some name brands like IBM, HP and especially Compaq, will see the drive a little differently. The older the PC is the more likely this is to be a problem when swapping drives. Even HP/compaq has now gone to more generic motherboards so with newer systems you may not have the problem.

actually there is a thought, because i think i manually configured the drive in the cmos and i should be able to remember what i typed in. Im going to try this when I get home.
The drive does show up in the bios correctly it just doesnt read in windows.

If you can at least get the old PC to post long enough to get into cmos you should be able to see how it's configured.

Im pretty sure ive nailed the problem, i just have to have a computer that i can change the settings on. My desktop is reading the drive with auto and the cylinder box is around 65000 and the other access modes arent anywhere around my drives cylinders which is 16383. I just need to be able to change these settings, but my cmos wont let me, it has fixed modes and no custom. Im going to try to use a computer from school to boot the drive properly.
(i cant use the origional computer because the IDE is screwed up, it will not detect a hard drive, I need an IDE card to get it to work)

The 16383 is the maximum number of cylinders a bios can read using cylinders/heads/sectors method. Above that it must be LBA. The maximum C/H/S is 16383/16/63 or about 8 gig. The firmware of many drives larger than that will still report that 16383 figure when queried by the bios.
I know some bios' will show a larger number of cylinders than that on >8 gig drives and I'm really not sure what that's all about. I thought maybe it was a virtual translation--that is, the number it would be if C/H/S could be used. But if you managed to configure the drive that way in cmos that's probably the reason the second PC can't access the data.

well i tried it in the schools computer and set everything maunally with no luck. I guess im just going to have to recover this drive on my own which sucks, but i guess thats the only thing i can do from here, unless I order a card for the old computer and even then im not sure it will get the drive working.

Mepis Live Disk will allow you to drag XP files from one hard drive to another... Connect your faulty drive and an empty drive to your computer and run Mepis LIve.This should work...goodluck.

Hey NAPSTER, I believe the data is quite important for ya. If I were you,I would go into DOS mode somehow.Boot in dos with a dos 6.22 bootable disk.If that shows all the partitions, things will become easy. If yes, then you can attach an empty drive and transfer all the data onto that, in dos mode. AFTER THAT you can format the potentially faulty drive using the system in which you want to use the drive.
Very best of luck

Most likely it's partitioned NTFS. If not, it's certainly FAT32. 6.22 won't access either. For FAT32 you might try a 98 bootdisk. For NTFS, I've used something called NTFS4DOS. Basically it creates a 95 bootdisk that'll read and write to an NTFS partition. There's also a download at bootdisk.com that'll create a similar disk.

I used my utility and got my info off of it although my computer restarted at 75% but its all good i got what i wanted off it. only problem is the hard drive is pretty much useless, it still says it needs to be formatted and when i try to format, it says windows cant format the drive so i guess its just junk.

At least you got the stuff off it. You may want to get a drive utility from the manufacturer and have it check the drive. Or you can get a zero-fill utility and wipe the drive and start over.

thats great, atleast you got what you wanted from the disk. Rest you can get the drive fixed, if in vain, u can get another one.

I used the low level formatting tool two days ago and it worked sucessfully. I had to format it three times and do a couple other weird stuff to get it working, but it is as good as new now. I copied my files and some movies to it and it is now my external drive for my laptop. THANX FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!!
