I've been experiencing some difficulties with my older, secondary system running Win 95. The hard drive sounds like it's speeding up and then stopping over and over again. This happens on random and the Windows will freeze during this time. In other instances, the hard drive light will simply turn solid and stay constantly lit although there is no processing sound coming from it. I literally have to smack the tower to get it going again. Now don't get me wrong, this is not how I usually fix problems with my pc but strangely this is the only thing that works. Here is an example: while performing a scan disk, the hard drive will start illustarting one of the symptoms described above and Windows will freeze. Only after I hit the tower will the hard drive recover and the scan disk resume normally as if nothing happened. This, as I have mentioned, happens randomly. BTW, scan disk has detected no problems except a small portion of bad clusters. What could be causing this? Defective connection cable? Defective hard drive? Hardware conflicts? Any advice or help or ideas would be appriciated.

90% chance you have a defective hard drive. Either the motor is going out at random times or the head is sticking to the platter which would explain why the Fonzi technique works. I'd get all important data off this drive soon because one day the Fonzi technique won't work or you just may Fonzi the thing so well that you put it out of his misery for good. Cheers.

The hard drive is losing power momentarily. Check the power plug. If you have a free one, put a different power plug on the hard drive. If this does not cure it it could be either the power supply or the hard drive. It acts like the power plug however.

After removing and disconnecting the hard drive and then placing it back in, the problems dissapeared. Indeed it seems that it was a loose power plug or a wire. Thanks for helping me solve this issue. It is very much appriciated.
