Recently on startup, a prompt "want to start from cd?" Nothing was in the cd rom to cause this. I reset and I could hear the hard drive(Western Digital) screech. I found WD's diagnostic utility and ran it on my hard drive. It said HD was operating okay. People I purchased this system(a new one) from had me change a BIOS setting to supposedly stop this(the cd rom prompt).
This morning on startup, I had a lesser screech. Also, when shutting down I noticed the screen was black for a few seconds with a cursor in the upper lefthand corner. Then it shut down.
And I did forget to mention that after I shut it down the first time today, I couldn't open the cd rom drive by using the button. I had to take a paper clip and have it release itself.
Could I have a crappy HD? I could send this system back still, but I already shelled out 40 bucks to put a decent(U.S. Robotics) modem in it. It came with an Intel 537(I researched it on the web and found it to be a piece of crap) that I swapped. I am kicking myself about right now.
Thanks.

I would use a diag to beat the hard drive to death tomorrow and see how it holds up. The WD utility may do this, or you may have to search for a program on download.com that stresses out the hard drive.

No idea what the deal is with the CD drive.

You need to figure out where the screech is coming from. Take off the case cover and run a hard drive diag and stick a pencil in each fan for two seconds each and figure out what is making noise. It is either a fan or the hard drive. If it is is the hard drive then I would not trust it even if it passes the diag test with flying colors. A noisy hard drive is near failure no matter how it performs. A new 40gb hard drive is $60 delivered to your door on pricewatch.com and by using hdcopy freeware you can do a byte by byte transfer from the old drive to the new drive.

i have a few questions.

-what brand is the cd drv?

-is the hdd the first boot device in the bios? (if not make it your 1st boot device, ie. HDD 0. disable "Boot other device option)

-when you push the eject button, does the cd tray try to eject but seem to get stuck? you could hear a *clunk* sound but can't it seem to continue ejecting

All good advice, just make sure it's not the power supply making the racket. It's possible.
