Hi,

If you look at my previous post, I was talking about hard drive installation etc..
This time, I'm going to buy a 120GB hard drive. I can't buy a larger one(160GB or 200GB), because my computer may not support it.

I'm living in Canada. And I look at staples.ca..and I found this:
http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_class.asp?CatIds=88%2C92,5645&name=CA%5FCL%5FHard+Drives

The strange thing is..look at the price for Maxtor Ultra 120GB, 160GB and 200GB.

120GB and 200GB has the same price and 160B i s the most expensive...why?

Should I wait longer to buy my 120GB hard drive? is the price going to raise for 120GB hard drive in the future?

Thx.

Hard drive prices are very unlikely to rise in the near future; there is too much competition between manufacturers.

If the 120GB and 200GB hard drives are the same price, I'd go for the 200GB. Seems the obvious choice.

We here in the states can't view the link you provided. I can say this, the drive capacity is only one factor to determine price. There is rotational speed, cache and warranty. Just buy a 120GB 7200RPM and be done with it.

Or buy the 200GB 7200rpm model and then a new motherboard (which supports large hard drives) and be glad the money you spent on the motherboard was saved on the cost of the hard drive.

He also need a processor and memory then. Plus SP1, which he doesn't have available. Plus this is a dual boot and Win98 can't handle 200GB disks.

yep ^^

Oh you can't view my page?

okay, it's something like this:

120GB = 149$ cdn
160GB = 157$ cdn
200GB = 149$ cdn

They are all the same brand, same features same rotational speed.
Oh, I just realized that 200GB one is the SPECIAL for this week...damn, my computer can't handle that...>_<

I wonder if there gonna be some special for 120GB in the future : /

Try pricewatch.com and look for companies that ship to Canada. Checkout the vendors at resellerratings.com. Bad or no rating, don't buy.

If you have more than just one slot left on your IDE cable you could go 2 80gig and get around the bios limit and still have 160gigs. Or you might want to consider a pci ata/133 expandsion card.
I really wish Justin would put an edit function on here...

You can obtain a free SP2 CD from Microsoft.

Why are you still hanging onto Windows 98? It isn't even a fully 32-bit OS. *sigh*

Then you could just keep your motherboard, no need to upgrade. So basically: get rid of Windows 98, buy the 160GB HDD (from the place setishock suggest it's $90 for 160GB!) and then install or slipstream SP2.

You don't need SP2 to use the 160/200GB. Only need SP1 and a COA, if you get the idea.

@OtheHill

I was under the impression that victorti83plus couldn't easily obtain SP1. However, since SP2 was recently released, Microsoft are offering free CDs. And it's more up-to-date — there's no reason not to get it.

He hasn't said, but I assume there is a reason why he can't get SP1 or SP2.

As for the comment about why are you still using windows 98. Let me give a real brief reason why people still use win98.
I have a p1 166 with a 100mhz fsb.
2 gig hard drive
64megs of pc100 edo ram.
My windows 98se is as happy as a pig in slop with all that. Just as it was when I had it on my p4 1.6 with 133mhz fsb and 384megs of pc133 sdram.
Get my drift?
It's flexable.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

I won't upgrade to SP1 or SP2 because:

1. My current hard drive is almost running out of space. Upgrading to SP1 need space.

2. Some of my games will causes some problems with SP1, SP2....

@setishock

Yes, true. But Windows 98, just like all Windows 9x OS's, is holy unstable and just about anything can upset it. The next OS made by M$ after Windows 98 that was a true 32-bit OS was Windows NT. And Windows NT, for a workstation OS, certainly does not suck. Need more convincing? Compare the Windows 98 system requirements to the Windows NT ones. About the same!

@victorti83plus

All I can say is: uninstall any apps/games you really don't need any longer. Then use Disk Cleanup to remove unnecessary files and try CCleaner too. Finally, use a tool such as PerfectDisk to defragment to the max. I would do this on both OS's if possible.

2. Some of my games will causes some problems with SP1, SP2....

Just about every game has an update to be compatible with SP2 now. And if it doesn't work in Windows XP, what have you got Windows 98 still installed for? Why not use that to run it?

"....I can't buy a larger one(160GB or 200GB), because my computer may not support it..."

Without (my) ploughing thru' all the above posts... If your bios won't handle a larger drive - install Promise (or similar) controller card. Gives you a current bios etc. and should handle most/all current drives? Afterwhich I guess you considers the assorted issues raised above for OS various. A new mobo etc. is drastic path if the rest of the system is OK for intended OS/usage etc.?
