I am trying to rescue files off a hard drive that has windows ME on it, I took the hdd out of the pc, put it into 2 different usb external cases, ... it installs on my xp machines, but then never shows up in "my computer".. I can however see it in system tools/computer management/disk tools.. but can do nothing with it there.. does anyone have any suggestions to help me ? i've tried it on 4 pc's.. all the same ... i even installed the drive into one of my pc's as a slave drive, and it's not seen there either.

Try a file recovery program. Here are examples:

Ontrack's 'Easy Recovery Pro'
http://www.ontrack.com

File Scavenger
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/filesc...

GetDataBack
http://www.runtime.org/

Zero assumption Recovery

When using WinXP or Win2000 look for the drive in Disk Management. If showing there you may need to take ownership of the files. To take ownership of the files look at the link below.

OtheHill.. I have no security tab, so I cannot follow those instructions... doesn't show up in safe mode either

as it stands, I am unable to get anything off the drive, and I need to.. the drive no longer boots up into windows and needs to be reformatted (it does boot into safe mode).. but I can't get the files off there either..

If you can see it in disk management, is it getting a drive letter? If not, right click on the drive in question and choose to change drive letter and paths. Give it a letter that is not being used like I or H, it should then show up in My Computer.

I don't understand why you can't get to Disk Managment.

Knoppix is a live version of Linux. Knoppix may be able to recover files if the drive is functioning but the file system is corrupt. Google for Knoppix.

Have you looked in Disk Management? Disk management is not the same as My Computer.

yes, that's the Only place i can see the drive...

I'm unable to access the drive at all on any of my pc's

I tried "taking ownership" of the files, to no avail, as there is no security tab when I go to the properties on the drive in question

nor am i able to boot the pc up that the drive is from, as it's not working properly and needs a reformat.. it does boot into safe mode, but I've not been able to get the files from there, as it doesn't let me use the USB drive in safe mode.
