Hard Drive not located on startup - it works.

Dell Dimension 4600 desktop
February 24, 2010 at 14:54:17
Specs: Windows XP, p4 2.4ghz / 2.5 gig ram
I am trying to run an old /original HD in my machine while the new one gets fixed. When I start the machine it says HD is not found.
I checked all cables and switched out a few.

When I run the Dell Windows XP Operating system disc it boots up the drive. It initially says no drive and then boots it up. Gives me options on what config i want to use, etc.

When I brought me machine to get fixed it didn't recognize the corrupt drive (Virus) but when removed and put in another system it worked.

The virus removed my admin rights...could it have done something in the BIOS?

Hope you can help.

Is the HDD a PATA or SATA? If it's a PATA, did you make sure the jumpers are set correctly? If it's an SATA HDD, you can't install XP without 1st installing the SATA drivers, unless there's an option in the BIOS to run the drive in IDE mode?

I know I replaced it with, the original, a Maxtor 3.5 ATA/EIDE Drive. I went through each jumper setting at a time and restarted it to make sure which one was right. Other than that, I am at a loss.
