Error:
hard drive not installed: if operating system not found, re-install hard drive. Hit any key to exit

I have a T22 ibm think pad. Was working fine, but now has the above error. I cannot get it to boot to cd or floppy because of this error.

I have replaced the hard drive and get the same error. (checked compatability too).

** I have recovered data off of the old hd, seems to be fine. I do not think the hard drive is the issue. I have searched the net, and IBM and have found only one post in Chinese(that I am currently searching for a translator for).

The funny thing is, there is no hard drive area on the bios on these things. I cannot auto detect or whatever. The new hd has been confirmed as working ok.

Basically this post is so there is something in English so if someone was to google this, they will find this post and not waste as much time as I have. Once I have an answer, if no one here has one that is, I will post it here.

Thanks, If anyone has any help let me know.

I cannot boot to floppy, or to cd either.

You haven't mentioned if you made sure the floppy and/or CD drive were made first in the boot sequence when you tried them, Have you done that?

I disagree. The error isn't causing the problem it's your BIOS setting that isn't booting from CDROM first.

This is the only link that I have found so far. But it aint english. Any translation would be appreciated.

I am starting to think it might be the disk controller.

bios 9=18=2002
IBM v1.10(16ET30WW)

Embedded controller 1.05

I have tried to boot with both an internal floppy and an internal dvd/rom installed.
I am unable to update the bios as I am not able to get it to boot from anywhere.

*there is no setting in the bios referencing hard drive, only every other component. Very strange indeed.

I have found some hd detection utilities on IBM;s site for this modle. but you have to be able to boot first.

I'm not familiar with that model, but I've had several others, the newest of which is my 600X, a 500mhz. IT will boot either from the external/internal floppy drive, OR the internal CDROM (swap bay) and IT DOES NOT need even a hard drive in the bay to do it.

If the thing will not boot from a KNOW GOOD floppy or CDROM, I'd say you have problems.

It sounds to me like you have figured out how to get into the bios and select the boot order.

One thing you might look for is the "reset" button, if there is one, or try resetting the bios---may be a major task.

If you have not already, go to IBM support and download the "hardware maintenance manual."

If you cannot find it, post back and I will.

Here is one thing I'd try----simplify the problem.

Will the floppy fit the internal bay(s)? Are you absolutely sure it will boot from the floppy?

Test both the cd and floppy disks you have in another computer to make sure they boot.

Then, pull EVERYTHING you can out of the laptop---PC cards, the hdd, any extra added memory.
