I have a dell 4600 512Mb Ram, 80gb IDE Hard drive that is not being recognized. I have changed nothing on the PC (no upgrades) it just stopped working. I have disconnected both optical drives and the floppy. but the bios still says no hard drive installed. I have taken the hard drive out and connected it as external drive to another system and i can see everything ok. Please help
While you are able to connect it to another computer......copy all your important files over to another location. Then run a hard drive diagnostic. The manufacturer of the hard drive will have this utility on their website. The drive may be failing, yet recognized in another system. If it fails...you;ll have to replace it and put your data back.
