Comment: I got a new 80 Gig IBM deskstar hard drive in addition to my old 15 Gig Fujitsu. I have made the appropriate jumper settings to make the new IBM hard disk primary slave. The problem is the my BIOS (award 4.51) does not recognize the new disk. In addition the BIOS also does not recognize the older drive when both the drives are connected at the same time (primary master / slave). To try and trouble shoot, I removed the old drive and made the new IBM as prmary master...... but the BIOS still won't recognize it. I don't know how to solve this problem. I hope someone could help out.

Reply: (edit)I found two reviews that say this drive does not work well as slave on IDE0. You may need to set it up as master on IDE1, which will slow down transfers. If you can't set it up on IDE0, you might want to exchange it for a Western Digital or Maxtor. Here is the review: http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/computers/hard_disk_drives/ibm_deskstar_75gxp/_review/93366/ Did you try the disk tools that came with the drive to install it? Your motherboard may require the bios extender (overlay software) to recognize this drive.

Reply: (edit)It looks like two problems to me. 1. Either the Master/Slave jumpers were wrong or one of the cables was plugged in upside down. 2.Your Bios does not recognize an 80 GB drive. IBM should have an overlay program to fix that problem.

Reply: (edit)I have tried installing the drive all by itself (i.e.. no other hdd or cd rom on the IDE channel). To be precise, I tried making it the primary master (BIOS did not detect it) and also secondary master (again BIOS could not detect). one point i noticed is... even though the hard drive is not detected... the light indicating the hdd is being used is always on. any suggestions?

Reply: (edit)Have you attmepted to let the BIOS auto-detect your HD or setting it in the LBA position might find it as well. I know when I put in my 80gig I had to set the BIOS to LBA to find it, after that it found it on it's own in auto. Clyde
