Ok my problem i seem to have at the moment is that my 80 gig maxtor hdd on my 1 gig duron is not being detected no matter what.

I have tested the hdd and it is fine on this system i am using now and i have also tried other hdd's in the duron to no avail there are no beeps from the bios whatsoever and i replaced the cmos battery with the one in this system temporary to test and that also had no effect, also no hdd led activity.

All ide leads are in properly and i am rather stumped on this.

I did install a new case today but i do remember this happening once before but it worked itself out rather promptly (before i replaced case also power switch had become faulty).

Any idea's appreciated, also the mb/sw lead i am wondering could this cause this that comes from the case to the motherboard.

hmm i guess so

Go to the "Control Panel".

Click on "Performance and Maintenance", "Administrative Tools", "Computer Management", "Storage", "Disk Management"

If you see it, there might be an option to activate it. I'm on win98 right now and can't check. So I can't be more specific.

Are both IDE controllers enabled in cmos/bios setup?

Is the drive type ID set to AUTO in cmos?

max00 thanks for the reply but i have no o/s on the hdd in question.

DAVEINCAPS thanks for reply
Both ide channels are enabled and the bios is set to auto to detect harddrive's, i was thinking along the lines of dodgy ide channel and such as it is a old motherboard but i cant really say to the other half i need to buy a new mobo, so i need to try fix it hehe.

If i had a choice it would be stamped on and new parts bought, shame that this isnt the case.

Any more help appreciated but i seriously think its a lost cause, definately a problem surrounding the bios. sheesh

hmm i guess so

Have you tried making sure that on the back of the hard-drive, the jumpers are set to the correct function? i.e. Master/Slave/CableSelect ?

Make sure that the Master/Slave setting on the hard-drive matches the settings in the BIOS.

I know you checked the IDE connections, but just ENSURE that there are no bent pins at all. Sometimes you can't always spot them. Also, check that the Molex Power connector going to the drive is live and working (test it on the CD-ROM drive for example).

Other than that...sounds like another ones bitten the dust!

Yes the jumpers are fine, all bios setting are set correctly and there is no bent pins whatsoever and the power is fine as is the hdd as it works on my p4.

It does seem to be it has bitten it but i aint giving up i need to be 100% sure before i try to get a new mobo for the system.

hmm i guess so

I'm assuming that it isn't being detected in the Bios. Have you tried the drive on the second channel? On most PCs, it's not necessary to have the C: drive on the first channel.
I'll mention one other thing, just in case. Some drives have different Mother/Slave plugging for when the drive is alone on a channel and when it is with another drive.

It's odd the cdroms aren't being detected. While it's not absolutely necessary for a bios to see them in order for them to work I'd think that motherboard shouldn't have that problem.

Do you have any smaller drives you could temporarily connect to see if they're detected? Also, there should be a capacity limiting jumper on that drive for older systems that may not be able to see the total capacity. You might try setting that, although I'm skeptical it'll make any difference since it's not seeing the cdroms either.

You may need to get an add-on ATA card if you can't get the on-board controllers working.
