I was listening to computer techs at a computer store here while shopping and heard one say "the hard drive wouldn't mount" so they threw it away. What exactly does that mean? Just curious.

MOUNT is a common linux term. It's hard to say---maybe he didn't know what he's talking about.
I would think a couple of disk diagnostic utilities would be in order, before you threw away (a new?) drive.

Hmmm, I did not know it was a Linux term as I'm not familiar with Linux. I remember him saying he connected the drive to their testing system & that it did not mount so they threw it away. Oh well.

Yeah, it probably originates from unix/linux terminology where 'mounting' a file means making it available for access.
In this case the tech meant the drive wouldn't set up correctly. Maybe it wouldn't partition or format or maybe the bios couldn't see it right. But there was some physical problem with the drive and he couldn't or didn't see the need to diagnose it further.
