hard drive locks up

Specs: Windows XP Home , intel dual core 2.0 ghz/2gb
programs wont open hard drive rarely makes a sound but system is running cool. harddrive is about 5 years old. running windows xp home with service pack 3 if restart I am lucky if I can run one partially before lock up.is this a power supply issue or hard drive?

Sounds more like the machine is "freezing" than a true HDD lockup (which would usually cause a blue-screen of death). Look inside to see if you have any bulging capacitors on the motherboard (a more common problem with OEM machines of 4 to 7 years old).

Run memtest for a day or so.

Get the hard drive diags and run them.

capasitors are all fine.
motherboard was purchased in 2008 or 2009.

I agree, run Memtest from a bootable CD to test your memory. A bad memory stick can cause problems like yours. Any errors are reason to replace the memory.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
